Workshop Offerings
Option 1: Magic
We will be teaching some magic fundamentals: card and coin palming, misdirection and the elegance of patter, as well as looking at larger illusions. Don't miss it!
Instructors: Fikayo is an engineering student at the University of Waterloo and has been doing magic for a few years...and he can't stop. He loves the reactions, but best of all, the smiles. Magic is one of the best ways to make people realize that life can be better
D.J. Carroll has been performing magic all over North America for over 20 years now. Close up, escapes, stage illusions and comedy are all things he teaches…he’s even worked magic into his Drama Curriculum. Can you imagine your summative being to perform a magic show…sweet!
Number of Students: 25 per session
Option 2: Stage Combat
Join Chris McLeod in some lessons on how to look like it hurts when it doesn’t. Acting in the physical realm (now that sounds intellectual). What we will really do is go over how to do some basic fight scene techniques that keeps you safe, but looking real mean, like an actor acting mean.
Instructor: Chris is one of the founding partners of National Stage Combat Training Partners (along with John Brogan), which is based in Ottawa; NSCTP has been training and certifying actors in stage combat since 2007. Partner is a very important concept in stage combat because your partner makes you look good.
Number of Students: 26 per session
Option 3: Belly Dancing
Alli has been studying dance for 18 years and has 10+ years experience teaching. Although she has studied many forms, Belly Dance is her specialty. Belly Dance is low impact (great for those with bad knees!) and is flattering to all body types. It is primarily a torso-driven dance, with an emphasis on articulations of the hips. In this class you’ll learn the basics of Belly Dance, including learning how to isolate and activate muscles, chest isolations, hip lifts and drops, hip circles, shimmies and so much more! This class will also begin and end with some light yoga to ensure all participants are adequately warmed up and cooled down.
Number of Students: 25
Option 4: Collaborative Playwriting
Are you and your friends interested in writing a play but have no idea where to start? In this workshop we will explore playwriting prompts and structure for collaborating on a group monologue show, then piece it together using Google Classroom. Mr. Josh Ashley has a background in theatre for young audiences and musical theatre and is currently a Drama and History teacher at Huron Heights Secondary School.
Number of Students: 20 Per Session
Option 5: Stage Management
Max Wilson who is one of our most experienced stage managers at the Stratford Festival and he would be pleased to teach young crew people in the art of Stage Management. He has experience in musicals, opera and classical works and is a wealth of knowledge.
Max will go over the following areas of being a strong stage manager
1. Overview of the philosophy of stage management:
2. Some details of the basic tasks of Stage Management including some paperwork templates.
3. Calling the show. The best part of the job.
- tips on putting together a calling book
- tips on calling a clear show.
- If I can find the book and the recording, I will do a demonstration of calling a musical. If time allows, I could give some of the students a crack at it.
4. How to start a career in Stage Management.

Ever wondered how balloons are be used to make everything from cute animals to enormous structures? Here's a chance to experience a balloon demo! We're going to learn the basics of balloon twisting. At the end of the session, all attendees will have made several small balloon animals.
Instructor: Drew Ripley likes to delight with whimsical balloon designs. He is an internationally trained Balloon Twister, Passionate Micro-Cyclist, Unicyclist, and Juggler. Enjoying the mechanical side of balloon art, he looks for reasons to use heavy machinery for larger balloon builds. Incorporating welding to enhance some of his balloon projects, he is always inventing something new. Crazy fact, his tallest balloon project so far was a team-build with Airgami in Houston Texas. They completed a 60 foot tall 40, 000 balloon project that was an accurate 1/3 replica space shuttle complete with rocket engines!
